A quarry is a place where rocks, sand, or minerals are extracted from the surface of the Earth. A quarry is a type of mine called an open-pit mine, because it is open to the Earth’s surface. Another type of mine, a sub-surface mine, consists of underground tunnels or shafts.

What does quarrying brings to people?

Advantages

  • Quarrying creates jobs in areas where there are limited opportunities.
  • There is a huge demand for the products of quarrying, such as building stone and cement. This is linked to the demand for new homes in the UK.
  • Quarrying provides income to local councils through taxation.
  • Good communications are needed for transporting the products of quarrying. As a result many remote rural areas benefit from improved access.

Disadvantages

  • Wildlife habitats are destroyed.
  • Valuable agricultural land is taken away.
  • Quarrying creates pollution from noise and dust.
  • Heavy traffic causes pollution and congestion on narrow country roads. The vibrations from heavy traffic can cause damage to buildings.
  • Quarries create visual pollution and tourists may be deterred by the scars on the landscape.
  • Causes landslide and possible casualties

However, Brgy. Agsungot, Cebu reported twice incidents of landslides just this month of September. There was once last Sep 17, 2021, at 4am when everyone are in deep sleep. Thunders of stones are rolling just near houses that covers the main road and blocks commuters the next day. Respondents came and fixed it, unfortunately, Sep 28, 2021, today at around 3:30 pm, another landslide just happened. A video footage from a resident was posted on Facebook. The question that residents want to bring about is that, “Should this quarry not be suspended?”. This seems to be not benefitting at all. Please let us know your thoughts.
